Because Boston City College fans think they are Notre Dame, when they are really Holy Cross.
Their arrogance drove away a very solid coach. They compare themselves to Notre Dame, a team with the largesse and following to remain unafiliated with a major conference, with a sissy schedule, who manages to get crippled by real teams like USC and Michigan every year, yet still garner a BCS bid.
O'Brien played in a very strong conference, had a record comparable to Notre Dame's, and was despised because good ACC teams (with a lousy fan following) don't get invited to the Orange Bowl.
Crazy! Fan following is a FAR greater determination of bowl destination than is record. The Humidifier Bowl (or whatever it is called) wasn't O'Brien's fault. It was the fans...yep, the same fans that drove him to make a lateral move to NC State.
Suckers!
