New Contributor Joshua Richards: What do you call a Clemson fan with no brothers or sisters?........... A virgin!

I recently graduated from the University of South Carolina. I was taught history, chemistry and a hatred for the Clemson Tigers. I will now give 5 reasons why you should dislike the tigers......

1. The Tiger Rag
Maybe I am spoiled. (USC has a great entrance song) Is it just me or is the tiger rag slightly annoying.?C L E M S OOOOOOO N! Come on now is that it? You spell Clemson and just emphasize the OOOOOOOOOO?

2. The Outrageous optimism
I know what your thinking. USC fans often suffer from the same thing. However, our optimisim is not quite as far-fetched. We say things like next year we will beat UGA, Florida and Tennessee....... Clemson fans think they will win the ACC! I can remember the summer after Whitehursts' first season. They actualy thought he was going to win the heisman in a few years. Could you imagine this years award show. The finalists are, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Vince Young and....... Charlie Whitehurst????? I can imagine everyone outside of the South East asking WHO???????

3. IPTAY (I pay tons a year)
Am I the only one that can not stand seeing the hoards of Clemson fans in their IPTAY shirts?

4. The Fan Base
Why is it that people from Manning and Sumter love Clemson? The more red your neck is, the bigger Clemson fan you are. There are so many Clemson fans that have no affiliation with the university. They heard the word agriculture and have been fans for life.

5. Rituals

I'll admit that running down the hill is cool. However, the rubbing of Howards rock is a little strange. It makes no sense...... only people in Clemson would rub a rock for luck. A ROCK! Is this a special rock? NO! Someone brought it from Death Valley in California. Someone please explain.

Q: What do you get if you cross a Georgia football player with a Clemson cheerleader?

A: Nothing! There are some things even a Georgia football player won't do!

2001 is probably one of the greatest entrances in college football. It's a lot better than running down a hill!

I hate that those damn chickens stole my theme song

No...... a unique entrace is Colorado with a live buffalo leading out the team. Did you read that? A LIVE BUFFALO!

Have you been to a USC game and hear 2001 being played and then the rooster being played over the loud speaker? If you're not paying attention at Clemson you will miss the great tradition of running down the hill. You can't miss 2001 and the rooster!

Now Josh... One point at a time...
1. At least our entrance isn't played over the loud speaker. Tiger Rag and Running Down The Hill year after year is listed in Collegiate publications as one of the best entrances. I'll admit I enjoy the magic trick of Cocky.... maybe one day he won't reappear.

2. I can't argue with the optimism factor. When you have top 15 recruiting classes its hard to not get excited. I seem to remember USC fans getting all excited over Lou Holtz's famous speech, "we want the Floridas, the Tennessees, the Georgias etc...." What would college football be without optimism?

3. What is the gay thing USC students do with their hands during 2001?

4. HERE is your big mistake. Next time you walk into Williams Brice, I've got a little game for you... Try and count the mullets. Now look at the difference between cars in our hometown of Boiling Springs next time you go home. Just notice the USC stickers compared to the Clemson ones and let me know if you still have this arguement.

5. Rubbing the rock is actually a pretty cool story. It's kind of like the Notre Dame sign they hit etc. I mean your team runs out to smoke... that's pretty original right??

I guess I'm venting because I ran into a USC fan the other day in Athens Ga. One of the guys with me was wearing a Clemson shirt so she decided to come on over. (completely uninvited) She asked, "do y'all go to Clemson, because if so, I'm soooo sorry." She went on to tell us how stupid we were for being Clemson fans. I asked her if she went to Georgia and she said, "No, I went to USC." At which point I laughed and said, "we beat you in every sport and I got a much better education than you did, why would I be sorry?"
She went on to tell me orange was an ugly color.... nice point....

Josh you are wise beyond your years
Keep preaching the truth to these Clemson fans and maybe one day they will join the rest of us as Allan Jackson put it "the real world" where Clemson is a mediocre at best program....although better then South Carolina I admit but nothing to beat your chest about like "some" of their fans do.

I'm doing well Josh. One more year of a masters program at Clemson. Good to hear from you too... I guess I could email you...

What kind of toast is it? Some USC friends told me it was supposed to look like a the spur of the gamecock?

I wasn't talking about the number of cars really... Just look around at the cars rusted over with USC stickers in BS. I've been through Sumter once when I was 6 and that was pretty much enough. No comment there...

in response to capt. kirk-

The top 1/4th of division 1a football year after year is not that mediocre. Spurrier will turn it around I bet, or at least bring the program back to the glory days... two more Outback bowl wins?

Mr. Calloway.....
Clemson has 1 more top 25 finish since 99 then USC. (00,03,05 for Clemson and 00,01 for USC). Clemson has 1 more bowl victory in that same timespan while USC has more high profile bowl wins (Outback vs Peach, Humanitarian and Tangerine or whatever its called now).

As I said....no debating that Clemson is a better program....but while Clemson is close to getting over the hump they are equally as close to not even going to bowl games. How many times did we hear "Clemson is 7pts or whatever away from being undefeated?". Well They were also 9pts from not even going to a bowl game (A&M, Maryland, USC).

Sorry, but the Outback is not a more high profile bowl THAN the Peach Bowl. The top 1/4 would be the top 29 to 30 teams, not the top 25. Keep in mind South Carolina has only finished in the top 25, 5 times in the 69 years the AP has been ranking teams. Clemson sits 36th in overall winning percentage which is better than mediocre. (my point earlier)

I would say the Outback is. It pays more and its a new years day bowl game. Now of course it is not a BCS Bowl but in the SEC the Peach gets the 5th SEC Team.

Yeah, I know about sellouts and other great things like close games (except this year) but even if you consider them to be on the same level USC won 2 outback bowls.....Clemson has 1 Peach.

And the top 30? Come on man, nobody lists that stat...if that is the case South Carolina was in the top 1/4 of division 1 football last year as well.....but I dont think we were that good.

You keep missing the point. In response to your original mediocre comment...."as Allan Jackson put it "the real world" where Clemson is a mediocre at best program".... the tigers sit 36th in overall winning percentage which is not mediocre. (USC sits 81st) Don't forget USC has 2 Outback wins TOTAL and a Carquest bowl. I'm not just going back to 1999. The top 25 would be close to 1/5 of the teams, and I would say "mediocre" would definitely not categorize the top 1/4 as well.

By the way, do I know you Kirk?
Keep it real.

No, I dont have a clue who you are.

And im not afraid to admit that mediocre was a poor word to use....I would average to slightly above average.

But who are we kidding....neither Clemson nor South Carolina strike any fear into the big boys in our conferences.

I wouldn't say that now.... you obviously have Florida and Tennessee (former big boy) worried. I think Clemson definitely worries Miami and Florida State now. Both schools have a lot of potential (maybe the optimist in me?) in the upcoming years.

Have a good one!

It will have to be a low scoring game for USC to win this year. I'll take your bet in November. Have a good one!
