This Job Will Be Open Very Soon - Think Spurrier Will Be Interested In It?
Miami is out of the rankings for the first time since 1999. The Miami Hurricanes had 107 consecutive top 25 poll appearances that was the nation's longest current streak. I think it's safe to say with the very average seasons Larry Coker has had with Miami for the past few years and with the 1-2 start this season, he will be forced to quit fairly soon. My friend Jeff Parks made an interesting statement to me today. He said with Spurrier not having the talent to have a great offense at Carolina, just like leaving the Washington Redskins in the NFL because he couldn't accomplish what we wanted, is there any chance he would try and leave South Carolina to pursue a school like a Miami like he left Washington? Meaning, a Miami would put him in a position with already great talent and he wouldn't have to still wait another 3 more years to attempt to get good enough players in at Carolina to accomplish his expectations.
I don't think we can rule this out at all (even though Spurrier hasn't received his lifetime membership to Augusta National). I think this job will definitely come open in a few months from now, will Spurrier show interest or no? What are your thoughts?

I believe that is just wishful thinking to think that Spurrier would leave to go to Miami. He is committed to turning USC into a winner and he knew coming here that he would have to build the program up. Remember that Spurrier just pledged $250,000 to USC's capital campaign for facilities that will get kicked off here in a few weeks along with some major gift announcements and renditions for expansion to Williams-Brice Stadium. As long as Spurrier has control then he is fine. In Washington it was more of Daniel Snyder that caused him to hate coaching in the NFL so much. Spurrier will stay at USC and keep building the program and in a few years challange for the SEC. Using a very common Clemson analogy.....last year USC was 2 pts away from being in the SEC title game in year 1 of the Spurrier experiment.

Seemed like Holtz wanted to turn it into a winning program too. Spurrier probably can with a little more help from law enforcement. What is the deal with the apartments next to Williams Brice? Is he a co-owner or something in those as well? I didn't quite understand everything with that. Another incentive to hang around? Do you know kirk? (glad to see you commenting again!)

There are several luxary condos being built around the stadium. Spurrier has one at Carolina Walk...along with Ray Tanner but im not sure what his deal is with that. Seems pretty logical to me though. Coaches work long hours and bam he has a place to crash instead of having to drive 30-45minutes to his house. Plus thanks to Daniel Snyder he is not hurting for money.
And for the record Holtz did turn it around. Im not a Brad Scott basher but the program was horrible his last year. Holtz went to 2 straight new years day bowls and 2 top 25 finishes. So out of his 6 years we qualified for bowl games 3 of those years. While for a school with a lot of football tradition that is not good but for a program that is building up you have to start somewhere. Holtz just hung around too long after his heart had left the game........he wanted to leave after 01. He recruited some great talent but they lacked character and hence the problems Spurrier is facing right now. Spurrier beat 2 teams that had a lot more talent then him last year and almost won against UGA and Clemson. Now this year is off to a shaky start but last year was looking pretty bad after the Auburn game.
Lou brought the program up and Spurrier is here to take it to the next level. Time will tell whether or not he is able to do it but you have to let him get his talent here. We just signed the #7 OL class in the country last year so we are headed in the right direction. This year we hope to win 6-7 and next year a few more. Give him a few years and I honestly think we will be in the hunt for an SEC title....not saying we will win it but I wont bet against Spurrier.

Whatever Kirk...Spurrier left Washington because he could not win in the NFL. Say what you want about Daniel Snyder, but had Spurrier been 10-6, he would still be in Washington. He could not win, realized he was in over his head in the NFL, and returned to college coaching (very similar to what Holtz did with the Jets).
I am not saying that Spurrier goes to Miami (for the record, I don't think he does). But let's not act like $250,000 is a huge out of pocket cost for Spurrier. That is pocket change. Spurrier wants to win more than anything in the world, and he would gladly part with the 250 G's if he felt he could be in a situation that would allow him to win another national title. Miami would present that opportunity immediately if he were to go there.

Well comments made by both Steve and Jerri Spurrier say otherwise but im sure you know the truth. Steve Spurrier is a straight shooter and if you have ever read an article about him you would know that. When Spurrier goes on radio to say that he is committed to building this program and he is going to give $250,000 out of his own pocket then I believe him. Look around a little bit and read comments made by Jerri Spurrier about this being their last stop and how they love the location of the house etc... He knew what he was getting into when he took the job otherwise he would have went back to Florida. You can go rely on assumptions while I will just go by what Steve and Jerri Spurrier have been quoted. Go check out the audio clip on Yahoo since you dont believe me. It will be the Aug 29th edition if im not mistaken.
Yes we went 7-5 last year (although we did beat UT and Florida) and so far we are 2-1 but have not looked very good. Teams can improve a lot over the course of the season and I am not writing this season off just yet. If Spurrier was not committed why would have say "We hope to win more then we could lose this year and lets build for a couple of years and have a squad that can make it to Atlanta".
So once again Spurrier is a straight shooter and living in Columbia, SC I think I would have heard a little about him being unhappy or looking around. This just seems like wishful thinking on the part of some people.

kirk its okay. If spurrier leaves, bob stoops will take the job at south carolina.
3:09 PM
If Spurrier were to leave (only for health reasons would heave leave) then I would take Bob Stoops in a heartbeat. But honestly there is only one other job that IMO Stoops would take and that one is in Gainesville. Had Florida not pissed off his friend and mentor Steve Orr Spurrier Stoops probably would have taken the Florida job the last go round instead they are stuck with Urban Meyer who will do good but he will have to change his offense up to win the SEC.

Kirk, it sounds like you know Steve Spurrier personally. I believe that the guy will stay at South Carolina, but to take the guy's word for what he said in article is absolutely ludicrous. I looked up an article where the guy said that he had no interest in the Florida job, even after it came open following Zook's dismissal. Then later on we find out that Spurrier was indeed interested, but gave up when he was told that he was going to have to interview. Unless you know him personally, and I know you don't, quit taking his word for what he says in the media. What do you think he is going to say..."Yeah, we suck and I think that this probably will be my last year" or "I am not really sure that this is where I want to retire." I could see that having a boost on recruiting.
9:12 PM
Of course I dont know Steve Spurrier. I am sure we also believe that Tommy Bowden is not interested in any other job (FSU) since he wants to make a name for himself at Clemson. I dont consider it to outside of the real of possibilities for Tubberville to go to Miami and Tommy take over on the plains. But that doesnt concern something potentially negative about South Carolina so it is just an assumption.
9:56 PM
#1 - No Kirk, I would not believe Tommy Bowden. Having Rick Barnes around will do that to you. I know coaches always are looking for the next big job. I would simply as hope (as you are now) that Tommy would not leave.
#2 - Tommy will not leave for Auburn. That is ridiculous. Why would they want him? I think they had their fill of Bowdens already.
